Here in Connecticut, blueberry bushes come to bear fruit in the summer, and blueberry picking is a yearly tradition. While they are great as a poppable snack, they’re also great in desserts.
And great on desserts as blueberry sauce! This easy sauce pairs well with any Ninja Creami creation, or anything else you can dream of.
While there are plenty of examples where blueberries can be incorporated into desserts, I’ve found that there is usually a strong contrast in textures with their typical pairings.
On top of that, blueberries usually have a very subtle flavor. For me, I can describe the sweetness of a strawberry or the tart punch of raspberries, but I have a hard time describing blueberries.
Well it’s time to change all of that. Let’s turn things on their head. Enter blueberry sauce!
Blueberry sauce is the perfect solution to getting the most flavor out of blueberries and getting a nice smooth consistency to pair with all of your favorite desserts!
We figured out how to finally get that extra kick of blueberry that sometimes the fresh berries lack. By cooking down the berries, the juices concentrate and give off next-level flavor that helps this sauce stand out!
As for the consistency, this sauce is smooth as butter. Blending the berries then straining the sauce means all of the chunks are gone! This allows you to get the picture-perfect drizzle!
Speaking of drizzle, if you want to add a pop of color to your otherwise monochrome dessert, this blueberry sauce is what you’re looking for!
Alex and I have done some experimenting, and we love to pair this blueberry sauce with maple ice cream, banana ice cream, and lemon cookie ice cream.
For an example of an amazing use of this blueberry sauce: take some lemon cake, add a dollop of vanilla bean gelato, then drizzle blueberry sauce on top and you have a beautiful and refreshing dessert!
First Time Making Blueberry Sauce or Looking for Tips?
Making sauces for ice cream (or really any dessert) seems simple, but there are plenty of questions you might have and that’s what we’re here for!
- Can I use frozen blueberries? Sure! You can use frozen blueberries to make the sauce, just make sure they are thawed before cooking with them. We think fresh blueberries provide the best flavor, but we understand sometimes it’s easier to use frozen fruit!
- How should I store the sauce? We recommend keeping the sauce in a jar or container that can be sealed tight. Our favorite is a mason jar, but any container with an air-tight seal will work! The sauce should also be refrigerated.
- How long does the sauce last? The sauce should last for 1-2 weeks if properly stored and refrigerated.
- What can I put the sauce on? You can put it on anything! We love it on ice cream, sorbet, gelato, biscuits, or cake! That’s the best part about these sauces: they’re more than just ice cream sundae sauce!
So no matter if you’re looking for ice cream sundae sauce or a sauce to drizzle on your favorite cake, grab some blueberries and get cooking!
