I like to think of black cherries as the forbidden fruit. I don’t know why, but every time I hear it, I hear black cherry (hopefully you can hear the emphasis through the italics).
Now don’t let its bougie-ness deter you, this sauce is for everyone! It’s sweet, it’s a bit tart, and it’s oh-so-tasty.
Also, a quick note about what black cherries actually are. Unlike their bright red cousins (the cherry), black cherries are darker in color, typically a dark purple or black. While red cherries are tart, black cherries are sweeter and have a more appealing flavor to most. This makes them perfect for a dessert sauce to pair with your Ninja Creami creations!
Personally, I have always steered clean from cherries because I hate eating fruit with pits. But a few weeks ago I saw Lindsay blissfully enjoying cherries as a snack. I decided I had enough of sitting on the sidelines.
Enter black cherry sauce! All of the things you love about black cherries, nothing you don’t (no pits)! The cherries cook down nicely, and by adding a bit of sugar to them, their sweetness shines and you get a beautiful sauce to drizzle on anything you like.
This sauce pairs great with vanilla bean and chocolate gelato, and if you are feeling daring, try it with our Cola ice cream. Cola ice cream plus black cherry sauce makes cherry cola deliciousness!
Make this sauce, and your friends will be asking for more, guaranteed. We hope you love it as much as we do!
First Time Making Blackberry Sauce or Looking for Tips?
Making sauces for ice cream (or really any dessert) seems simple, but there are plenty of questions you might have and that’s what we’re here for!
- Can I use frozen black cherries? Sure! You can use frozen black cherries to make the sauce, just make sure they are thawed before cooking with them. We think fresh black cherries provide the best flavor, but we understand sometimes it’s easier to use frozen fruit!
- How should I store the sauce? We recommend keeping the sauce in a jar or container that can be sealed tight. Our favorite is a mason jar, but any container with an air-tight seal will work! The sauce should also be refrigerated.
- How long does the sauce last? The sauce should last for 1-2 weeks if properly stored and refrigerated.
- What can I put the sauce on? You can put it on anything! We love it on ice cream, sorbet, gelato, biscuits, or cake! That’s the best part about these sauces: they’re more than just ice cream sundae sauce!
